As you could've guessed from my Yamoto post, I prefer my translations to be consistent with any other English text, especially if it comes from Japanese sources. I don't have anything against the Otakumode/Funimation translations, but sometimes they're a bit more imaginative than I'd like. Anyways, I'm writing this because one part of my translations ended up having an official translation that I wasn't aware of. Of course, what I'm talking about is Silver Karasu's favorite cigarette brand, 「少し明るい海」.
Since the name of the brand is written in proper Japanese (as compared to most of NinSatsu language, written in katakana), I have decided to give it a proper Japanese translation. "Slightly Bright Sea" might not make much sense, but that's exactly how it sounds like in Japanese, and we all know how weird Ninja Slayer is. I did have some second thoughts about it, but mostly because I'm not a native English speaker, so I wasn't sure if that's the best way to translate it. And as it turns out, it's not - as I was checking the official Twitter account, I stumbled upon this:
Namusan! Not only can you buy your own cigarette case (say, if you want to cosplay Silver Karasu), but it also has the English brand name on it! Indeed, "Sea of Twilight" sounds much better than "Slightly Bright Sea", and the meaning is almost exactly the same! Naturally, I just had to edit my translations with this new bit of knowledge in mind. This is not the first (and most probably not the last) time I do it, so don't be too surprised if you notice some phrases change since the last time you saw it.
And yes, Ebten is your best source of Ninja Slayer merchandise, be it the books, the T-shirts, or anything in-between. Keep in mind that they don't ship overseas, but you can use any middleman service you like. JISSAI YASUI!
